Choosing a forklift is not simply a matter of selecting a lifting capacity and asking for a price. Two forklifts with the same rated capacity may perform very differently depending on the load, lift height, aisle width, working environment and daily operating hours.

Before requesting a quotation, consider the following factors. Clear application information helps the supplier recommend a safer and more practical configuration.

1. What Will the Forklift Lift?

Start with the load itself.

You should confirm:

  • Maximum load weight

  • Typical load weight

  • Load dimensions

  • Pallet dimensions

  • Whether the load is evenly distributed

  • Whether any special attachment is required

Do not select a forklift based only on the weight printed on the pallet. Forklift capacity is normally rated at a specified load center. A long, irregular or forward-positioned load moves its center of gravity farther from the forklift and may reduce the truck’s effective lifting capacity.

Attachments such as side shifters, fork positioners and clamps can also reduce the available capacity because they add weight and may move the load farther forward.

For this reason, the heaviest load, its dimensions and the required attachment should always be confirmed together.

2. How High Must the Load Be Lifted?

The required lift height affects the mast configuration and the forklift’s residual capacity.

Measure the height of the highest rack beam or unloading position, then allow enough clearance for safely placing the load. It is also important to confirm:

  • Maximum fork height

  • Height of the load itself

  • Ceiling height

  • Doorway height

  • Container entrance height

  • Lowest overhead obstruction

A forklift may have sufficient capacity at a low height but a lower available capacity when the load is raised to a greater height. The final selection should therefore be based on both load weight and maximum lifting height.

The mast’s closed height also matters. A forklift that can reach the required rack level may still be unsuitable if its lowered mast cannot pass through a doorway or enter a shipping container.

3. Where Will the Forklift Operate?

Indoor operation

Electric forklifts are commonly considered for warehouses, food facilities and other indoor applications because they are quiet and produce no exhaust emissions at the point of use.

Before choosing an electric forklift, confirm:

  • Daily working hours

  • Number of shifts

  • Available charging time

  • Charging location

  • Local voltage and electrical supply

  • Battery type and capacity

Outdoor operation

Diesel forklifts are widely used for demanding outdoor work, uneven surfaces and applications requiring long operating hours or quick refueling.

For outdoor use, also check:

  • Slopes and ramps

  • Dust, rain or high temperatures

Some operations involve both indoor and outdoor work. In these situations, the supplier should understand how much time the forklift will spend in each environment before recommending a power type.

4. How Wide Are the Aisles?

A forklift needs enough space to approach a rack, turn and position the load safely. The width of the truck alone does not determine whether it can work in an aisle.

The required operating space depends on:

  • Forklift model

  • Turning radius

  • Right-angle stacking dimension

  • Pallet length and width

  • Load overhang

  • Clearance between racks

  • Driving direction

Measure the narrowest working aisle rather than the widest one. Also record any columns, walls, doors or equipment that may limit movement.

A standard counterbalance forklift may be suitable for open areas and wider aisles. Reach trucks, three-wheel electric forklifts or other warehouse trucks may be more appropriate where space is limited.

The supplier should check the selected model’s official aisle-width specification against the actual pallet and warehouse layout.

5. How Many Hours Will It Work Each Day?

Operating intensity affects the power system, battery capacity, cooling requirements and maintenance plan.

Useful information includes:

  • Working hours per day

  • Number of shifts

  • Loads handled per hour

  • Average travel distance

  • Frequency of lifting

  • Charging or refueling opportunities

  • Peak-season workload

A forklift used occasionally in a small warehouse has different requirements from one operating continuously across several shifts.

For electric forklifts, daily working hours help determine whether a lead-acid battery, lithium battery, spare battery or opportunity-charging arrangement is more appropriate.

6. What Type of Tires Does the Site Require?

Tire selection affects traction, stability, ride comfort and ground clearance.

Common options include:

  • Pneumatic tires

  • Solid pneumatic tires

  • Cushion tires

Smooth indoor floors, rough outdoor yards and sites with sharp debris may require different tire solutions. The correct choice also depends on the forklift model and the conditions supported by the manufacturer.

Photos or videos of the operating surface can help the supplier understand the application more accurately.

7. Are Special Attachments Needed?

Attachments can make a forklift more suitable for a particular load, but they must be included in the capacity calculation.

Common attachments include:

  • Side shifter

  • Fork positioner

  • Paper roll clamp

  • Bale clamp

  • Rotator

  • Carton clamp

  • Longer forks

  • Fork extensions

Explain what the forklift will handle and how the load must be picked up, transported and placed. The attachment should be matched to the forklift, load and hydraulic requirements.

Never assume that adding an attachment leaves the original rated capacity unchanged. The forklift’s data plate should show the approved capacity of the complete forklift-and-attachment combination.

8. What Other Site Restrictions Apply?

Small details can determine whether a forklift is practical after delivery.

Before ordering, check:

  • Door height and width

  • Container entrance dimensions

  • Elevator capacity

  • Floor loading limits

  • Ramp gradient

  • Ceiling and pipe clearance

  • Cold-storage conditions

  • Hazardous-area requirements

  • Local charging voltage

  • Destination-country regulations

When possible, provide warehouse drawings, rack dimensions and site photographs together with the inquiry.

Information to Provide When Requesting a Quotation

For an initial forklift recommendation, prepare the following information:

  1. Maximum load weight

  2. Load and pallet dimensions

  3. Required lift height

  4. Minimum aisle width

  5. Indoor, outdoor or mixed use

  6. Ground conditions

  7. Working hours and shifts per day

  9. Required attachments

  10. Doorway or overhead height restrictions

  11. Destination country

  12. Site photos or layout drawings

The more accurate this information is, the easier it is to compare suitable models and avoid unnecessary changes later.

There is no single forklift configuration that is best for every application. The right choice depends on the relationship between the load, lifting height, available space, working environment and operating intensity.

A good inquiry should describe the job the forklift must perform—not only the capacity the buyer expects to purchase.
